Mesothelioma Information

Mesothelioma is a serious health problem among those who have worked in old warehouses and old buildings.  Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that most often occurs in the thin membrane lining the lungs, chest and abdomen.  Additionally, it is considered localized if the cancer is confined to the pleura, or advanced if it has spread beyond the pleura to other parts of the body such as the lungs, lymph nodes, , abdominal cavity, or chest wall.  Generally speaking, mesothelioma is a form of cancer affecting the abdominal cavity, chest cavity, and the region surrounding the heart.  It is a preventable disease and would've been if asbestos companies would've taken the steps to protect their workers, but the evidence is clear they didn't. Let's now discuss it in more detail.

Basic Mesothelioma Overview

Research and testing continues to be conducted in an effort to find a cure for mesothelioma.  Currently, the most common treatments for mesothelioma are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy and heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Since mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, it is advisable that you visit a physician who is a specialist in treating the disease.  Asbestos, for example, has proven to be one such mineral which has caused one asbestos related disease after another such as Mesothelioma.  The 2 common types of mesothelioma are: Pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) and Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen organs).  The survival time for a patient with diffuse malignant mesothelioma is from 4 to 24 months from the observance of the symptoms.

Asbestos

Mesothelioma usually only develops in people who have had asbestos exposure, but it is the second most common cancer in asbestos exposure, the first is bronchogenic cancer.  There is an entire industry of malpractice and litigation attorneys that want to find people who have asbestos exposure and see if they can bring a lawsuit to try and cash in on this very deadly cancer-mesothelioma.  Should paintball players be concerned about asbestos and mesothelioma. 

A review of the patient's medical history, including history of asbestos exposure is taken, followed by a complete physical examination, x-rays of the chest or abdomen, and lung function tests.  There are several imaging techniques which may prove useful when mesothelioma is suspected due to the presence of pleural effusion combined with a history of occupational or secondary asbestos exposure.  Signs of prior non-cancerous asbestos disease, such as pleural plaques or pleural calcification, or scarring due to asbestosis may also be noted.  CT, however, is not able to differentiate between changes associated with benign asbestos disease (pleural disease), or differentiate between adenocarcinoma of the lung which may have spread to the pleura verses mesothelioma.

Cancer

Localized malignant mesothelioma Stage I: The cancer is found in the lining of the chest cavity near the lung and heart or in the diaphragm or the lung.  Advanced malignant mesothelioma Stage II: The cancer has spread beyond the lining of the chest to lymph nodes in the chest.  Stage III: Cancer has spread into the chest wall, center of the chest, heart, through the diaphragm, or abdominal lining, and in some cases into nearby lymph nodes.  Stage IV: Cancer has spread to distant organs or tissues.  Recurrent malignant mesothelioma Recurrent disease means that the cancer has come back (recurred) after it has been treated.

Exposure

Believe it or not, it was not until 1960 that mesothelioma symptoms were chronicled. Its association to asbestos was as well first really initiated at around this time although some say it wasn't until much later around 1970 or so. Cells

Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells.  Chemotherapy is called a systemic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, and then travels through the body, and can kill cancer cells in and throughout the physical instrument.  Intraoperative photodynamic therapy is a new type of treatment that uses special drugs and light to kill cancer cells during surgery.  A drug that makes cancer cells more sensitive to light is injected into a vein several days before surgery.

As defined, mesothelioma is a permanent disease that will result to the victims death.  Pleural mesothelioma is often incorrectly labeled as a type of lung cancer because of the pleura's close proximity to the lungs.  The most common type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma (accounting for approximately 75% of all mesothelioma cases), or mesothelioma of the pleura. 

Summary

So, what are the most common forms of mesothelioma? They are Pleural mesothelioma, Peritoneal mesothelioma, and lastly Pericardial mesothelioma. As mentioned in this article and as a reminder The most common cause of mesothelioma is asbestos and exposure to asbestos fibers.  Peritoneal mesothelioma is extremely rare, occurring in only one-fifth of diagnosed cases.  Because the cells of the mesothelium are responsible for providing fluid lubrication for the body’s internal organs, mesothelioma is particularly insidious because it can affect multiple organs simultaneously, usually without major symptoms or pain.  Due to its uncommon nature, mesothelioma is typically difficult to diagnose and treat.
